“With Amy’s music, it’s not hard to explain why I’m so captivated by it. She has brought together two different worlds—jazz and samba—with magical chemistry. She is the outgrowth of the unique experience of her life…with a superb talent.” – Antonio Almeida, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

“From the first four bars, it was a terrific experience to hear Amy’s compositions reconstituted with the Brazilian Brass Tacks instrumentalists. I sat back with a great cup of coffee and savored every note. I heard her band perform many times in New York, so I can compare—I swear, the Rio bunch seem to swing it a little heavier with that Brazilian thing. What an accomplishment!” – Vivian Warfield, percussionist – Queens, NY

Says Amy: “Over the years, three things have stood out in my musical persona: one is the fact that I am mostly self-taught, another is that I have almost always been leader of my own groups, and yet another is my penchant for mixing the music of other world cultures with jazz.

I guess, even though I was mostly unaware of it when I was younger, I’ve always believed that originality and style are not things that we can be taught or even learn from other musicians. In leading my own groups, I felt I was more open to the source, which I believe is transcendental, not personal. I felt this the most strongly when I wrote the first arrangements for my band, Brass Tacks.

I worked non-stop and would stack up what I had written on top of the piano late at night before retiring. The next day I would have the strangest sensation that I hadn’t written them at all. It was as if little elves had crept in as I slept and done the work—I could almost see the tiny footprints they left on the piano as they scampered off into the night.” ~Amy Duncan
