Listen to the Music!
This week, we offer you a traditional, hymn-like solo entitled The King of Love My Shepherd Is sung by Susan Millard Schwarz. It is a calming arrangement that gradually builds up to a powerful ending, with lyrics adapted from Psalm 23 that employ the oft-used, poignant metaphor of God as our shepherd, gently guiding and protecting his flock. This song is from Susan’s album Gather Us In, a compilation of some of her favorite inspirational songs which include texts from a broad range of faith traditions. It is a collaborative effort of outstanding musicians from central Ohio, featuring Susan Frost on piano, Brett Allen on viola, David Schmoll on keyboard and guitar, Lisa Jelle on flute, and John McBride on the Bodhrán.
About the Artist
Susan Millard Schwarz is frequently hailed for her interpretive abilities as a vocal artist. Her musicality is revealed through her vocal warmth and color, and the sensitivity with which she shapes her melodic lines.
A person of faith, she has great interest in whatever spiritual quality there may be within a piece of music. This may be a depiction of the natural world, as is found in German Lieder, or it may be a direct message from the Bible, as is frequently found in Christian Science repertoire. And sometimes, a song that carries a simple reminder that we are not alone is enough to deliver deep healing to a listener’s heart.
