Listen to the Music!

This week we bring you Lisa Redfern’s rendition of the well-known hymn Abide With Me. This beloved tune, with lyrics extolling God’s omnipresence, takes on the qualities of a lullaby in Lisa’s sweet, gentle interpretation. Astute listeners will note that this version includes a fourth verse in addition to the hymn’s usual three: in fact, Henry Francis Lyte’s original poem consisted of eight stanzas, and this “new” verse is drawn from his final stanza. This song is from Lisa’s album A Living Prayer, which is a collection of loved hymns from her childhood and other inspirational songs she’s sung as solos over the years in churches of various denominations. Some are from the Christian Science Hymnal and some of the songs were sung in services for the Unity church or the Unitarian church or the Center for Spiritual healing.

About the Artist

Lisa Redfern is an award-winning singer-songwriter with 11 solo recordings. Her clear, bell-like voice has often been compared to Judy Collins and Joan Baez. But she is a versatile vocalist who blends her roots in folk, bluegrass and country with blues and jazz to create something unmistakably her own.

Lisa has opened for many notables, including The Roches, Livingston Taylor, Cindy Kallet, Dave Mallett, and she shared the stage (and several duets) with Pete Seeger. Her recordings have garnered positive critical reviews and extensive radio play, and she has added her voice to the soundtracks of dozens of other artists. Her awards include Best Song (West Coast Songwriters Contest), Finalist (Great American Song Contest & USA Songwriting Competition), as well as a NAPPA Gold and a Parents’ Choice Silver for her lullaby CD, “Sing Me Goodnight.”
