Sung from the perspective of a soldier who realizes that if forced to fight, one should enter a battlefield as if going to a funeral -- and that one’s enemies are not demons, but human beings. One doesn’t rejoice in victory, but mourns the tragedy. This song has wide anthemic range. The difficulty level is “medium.” The piano part somewhat complex. However, guitar chords are included and the accompanist may improvise a more simplified arrangement. DUET versions available.

I ENTER THIS BATTLE GRAVELY
(Song of the Reluctant Soldier)

Music and lyrics by Steve Schalchlin

c 2004 by See No Evil Music / Lil Shack O Tunes / ASCAP

If I’m pushed into a battle
I guess I’d have to fight
Sometimes you have to take a stand
Defending what is right

But my enemies aren’t demons
They’re human just like me
I will not delight in the slaughter
Or rejoice in the victory

I enter this battle gravely
And I come with only sorrow
If I have to think war today
Will still be here tomorrow
I enter this battle gravely
With no smile upon my face
As I take my place
I enter this battle gravely

Weapons are my last resort
They are the tools of fear
The peaceful ones avoid them
Never want them near

But if I have to fight
Then I will fight
Cuz there are some things in this life
Worth fighting for

I enter this battle gravely
And I come with only sorrow
If I have to think war today
Will still be here tomorrow
I enter this battle gravely
With no smile upon my face
As I take my place
I enter this battle gravely

Fighting for peace with justice
Justice with peace
Peace with justice
Justice with peace
I enter this battle gravely
I enter this battle gravely
