Havin’ A Talk With God
Episode #13 – Trees
Thyme
Good Mornin’ God.
God
Good Mornin’ Thyme.
Thyme
It is a good mornin’, ya’ know?
God
Indeed it is. Indeed it is.
Thyme
Them Lazy Daisys is comin’ up an’ I saw a coupla buds a’ them Black Eyed Susans too. I’m here ta’ tell y’ I jus’ can hardly wait!
God
Ya’ sure do love your flowers, don’t cha?
Thyme
Well. They ain’t my flowers. I think on ‘em more as your flowers!
God
Well, I suppose I can at least take credit for the design of ‘em.
Thyme
Well, didn’t you make all them flowers an’ trees an’ bushes an such?
God
Fact is, I did. Though Mother Nature tends to get all the credit.
Thyme
You know her? Mother Nature?
God
No Thyme. Mother Nature is a figment of the human imagination. She’s not what you would call “real.”
Thyme
Zat so? Well, I’m glad ta’ put that ol’ idea ta’ rest. God … can I tell ya’ a little secret?
God
I’m not sure we have any secrets, Thyme.
Thyme
You know everything I’m doin’ all the time?
God
Well, of course I do, child. I watch over you.
Thyme
Lordy, a girl might oughta get a little privacy ‘round here!
God
Well, I’m sorry, Thyme. Maybe you’re right. Go ahead an’ tell me your secret. Maybe I missed it.
Thyme
OK. No hard feelins. T’other day I lay down next ta’ the big ol’ Sycamore tree in our back yard right there in the dirt … an’ started thinkin’ ‘bout it.
God
Uh huh. Yeah, I saw you there.
Thyme
I didn’t think nobody could see me.
God
Well, I’m not exactly nobody, Thyme.
Thyme
Anyways, I had the thoughts that the life runnin’ through that ol’ tree … was no different than the life runnin’ through me.
God
Uh huh.
Thyme
Well, you think that’s true?
God
Keep goin’.
Thyme
That tree has certainly lived longer ‘an me an’ therefore was pro’bably smarter than me cuz of all his experience an’ all. It jus’ come over me that we was both, you know, fellow livin’ bein’s an’ such. That the essence a’ each of us was the same, but we jus’ looked a bit different. That tree, in his own way, livin’ in our back yard, knew all ‘bout my doin’s, an’ all ‘bout Mama, an’ pro’bably even all ‘bout my Daddy … least before he left. Why that ol’ Sycamore was jus’ one a’ the family.
God
Uh huh.
Thyme
You think I’m nuts?
God
Nope.
Thyme
Well, is that all ya’ have ta’ say?
God
Yup. You already said it all.
Thyme
I did?
God
Uh huh.
Thyme
Well how ‘bout that? I jus’ love that ol’ tree.
God
An’ I’m here to tell you that ol’ Sycamore has a great affection for you too.
Thyme
I know. I could feel it – layin there in the dirt. Jus’ like he was … layin’ there in the dirt. We was the same.
God
I think you just described a thing called “Soul.”
Thyme
I did?
God
Yup.
Thyme
Well, how ‘bout that? Ya’ know, trees an’ flowers, an’ sky, an clouds … I ain’t sure I’ll ever understand ‘em. An’ you, God … How am I to ever understand you? You are the biggest mystery. I declare, In the mornin’ you’re ma’ best old friend, but sometimes at night, thinkin’ ‘bout all these things, I think I must be goin’ a bit loony. Jus’ like Mama. You think I’m a little touched? I worry sometimes. You think I’m crazy? (no response) God? God, are ya’ there? God … Oh lordy. Off ta’ talk ta’ somebody else, I ‘spect. (sigh) Well, look at that. There’s another lazy daisy comin’ up right at ma’ feet. Welcome to the world, little friend …
Thank you so much for this delightful slice of Life!
