A Living Prayer

Lisa Redfern  •  Album

A Living Prayer, released in 2013, is a collection of loved hymns from my childhood and other inspirational songs I’ve sung as solos over the years in churches of various denominations. Some are from the Christian Science Hymnal and some of the songs I’ve sung in services for the Unity church or the Unitarian church or the Center for Spiritual healing. For me, these songs are sung prayers. Wherever my spiritual journey has taken me, it is the music that resonates most deeply and that I carry with me when I reach to the divine for healing and comfort. I hope it brings you peace and healing.

Feed My Sheep
Music by Lyman Brackett
Words by Mary Baker Eddy

Shepherd, show me how to go, o’er the hillside steep,
How to gather, how to sow, how to feed Thy sheep;
I will listen for Thy voice, lest my footsteps stray;
I will follow and rejoice, all the rugged way.

Thou wilt bind the stubborn will, wound the callous breast,
Make self-righteousness be still, break earth’s stupid rest.
Strangers on a barren shore, laboring long and lone,
We would enter by the door, and Thou know’st Thine own;

So, when day grows dark and cold, tear or triumph harms,
Lead Thy lambkins to the fold, take them in Thine arms;
Feed the hungry, heal the heart, till the morning’s beam;
White as wool, ere they depart, shepherd, wash them clean.

O Dreamer
Music: Traditional Irish Melody
Lyrics by Rosa M. Turner

O dreamer, leave thy dreams for joyful waking,
O captive, rise and sing, for thou art free;
The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking,
Unloosing bonds of all captivity.

He comes to bless thee on his wings of healing;
To banish pain, and wipe all tears away;
He comes anew, to humble hearts revealing
The mounting footsteps of the upward way.

He comes to give thee joy for desolation,
Beauty for ashes of the vanished years;
For every tear to bring full compensation,
To give thee confidence for all thy fears.

He comes to call the dumb to joyful singing;
The deaf to hear; the blinded eyes to see;
The glorious tidings of salvation bringing.
O captive, rise, thy Savior comes to thee.

A Living Prayer
Music and Lyrics by Ron Block

In this world I walk alone
With no place to call my home
There is one who holds my hand
On the rugged road through barren lands

The way is dark, the road is steep
But he’s become my eyes to see
The strength to climb, my griefs to bear,
The Savior lives, inside me there

In your love, I find release, a haven from my unbelief
Take my life and let me be, a living prayer, my God, to Thee
In these trials of life I find another voice inside my mind
He comforts me, and bids me live, inside the love the Father gives

This Is the Day
Music by Richard Rodgers
Words by Laura Lee Randall

This is the day the Lord hath made
Be glad, give thanks, rejoice
Stand in His presence unafraid
In praise lift up your voice

All perfect gifts are from above
And all our blessings show
The amplitude of God’s dear love
Which every heart may know

The Lord will hear before we call
And every need supply
Good things are freely given to all
Who on His word rely

We come today to sing God’s praise
Not for such gifts alone
But for the higher, deeper ways
In which His Love is shown

O Tender, Loving Shepherd
Music by Arthur S. Sullivan
Lyrics by Frederic W. Root

O tender, loving Shepherd, we long to follow thee,
To follow where thou leadest, though rough the path may be;
Though dark and heavy shadows enshroud the way with gloom,
We know that Love will guide us, and safely lead us home.

We know, beloved Shepherd, the path that thou hast trod
Leads ever out of darkness, and on and up to God.
If from that path we wander, and far astray we roam,
O, call us, faithful Shepherd, and bring us safely home.

Throughout the way, dear Shepherd, Thy strong hand doth uphold;
The weary ones, at nightfall, Thou gently dost enfold.
And when to Truth’s green pastures with joy at length we come,
There shall we find, O Shepherd, our blest, eternal home.

How Deep in the Valley
Music and Words by Sarah Harmer

How deep in the valley must you go
To find what your footsteps already know
The way on is the way out
There are signs to follow
There is deep in the valley
And I’m bound to go

How deep in the valley must you stay
To know why your footsteps led you that way
The way on may be truly to stand in one place
And let the deep of the valley
Fill you will grace

And treat yourself lightly
Treat yourself kind
You’ve got nothing to worry on
You will be fine
You will leave this place laughing
And somebody will cry
There is deep in the valley
Wonder not why

Wonder not why go
Wonder not to stay
If it takes me and I follow
Or if I lead the way
It can come when it wants to
But it might have to wait
There is deep in the valley
I don’t hesitate

I don’t take it too lightly
But it don’t weigh down too low
There is high on the cliff top
And there are deep creeks below
There’s a green shade you can’t miss
Where the spring water flows
There is deep in the valley
And I’m bound to go

Abide with Me
Music by William H. Monk
Words by Henry Francis Lyte

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, O abide with me

I need Thy presence every passing hour
What but thy grace can foil the tempters power
Who like Thyself, my guide and stay can be
Through cloud and sunshine, O, abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness
Where is death’s sting, where grave Thy victory?
I triumph still if Thou abide with me

Hold thou thy hand before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heavens morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee
In life and death, O Lord, abide with me.

I Walk with Love
Music by Henry Carey
Words by Minny M. H. Ayers

I walk with Love along the way
And oh it is, a holy day
No more I suffer cruel fear
I feel God’s presence with me here
The joy that none can take way
Is mine, I walk with Love today

Who walks with Love along the way
Shall talk with Love and love obey
God’s healing truth is free to all
Our father answers every call
Tis he dispels the clouds of gray
That all may walk with Love today

Come, walk with Love along the way
Let childlike trust be yours today
Uplift your thought, with courage go
Give of your heart’s rich overflow
And peace shall crown your joy filled day
Come walk with Love along the way

Mother’s Evening Prayer
Music by Lisa Redfern
Words by Mary Baker Eddy

O gentle presence, peace and joy and power
O life divine, that owns each waiting hour
Thou love that guards the nestling’s faltering flight
Keep thou, my child on upward wing tonight

Love is our refuge, only with mine eye
Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall
His habitation, high is here and nigh
His arm encircles me and mine and all

Oh make me glad for every scalding tear
For hope deferred, ingratitude, disdain
Wait, and love more for every hate and fear
No ill, since God is good and loss is gain

Beneath the shadow of his mighty wing
In that sweet secret of the narrow way
Seeking and finding with the angels sing
Lo, I am with you alway, watch and pray

No snare, no fowler, pestilence or pain
No night drops down upon the feathered breast
When heavens’ aftersmile earth’s teardrops gain
And mother finds her home and heavenly rest.

Love Will Guide Us
Music and Words by Sally Rogers

Love will guide us
Peace has tried us
Hope inside us will lead the way
On the road from greed to giving
Love will guide us through the dark night

If you cannot sing like angels
If you cannot speak before thousands
You can give from deep within you
You can change the worlds with your love

You are like no other being
What you can give no other can give
To the future of our precious children
To the future of the world where we live

Hear the song of deep within you
Heed the song of peace in your heart
Spring’s new beginning will lead to harvest,
Love will guide us on our way.

Pilgrim on Earth
Music by H. Walford Davies
Words by P.M.

Pilgrim on earth, home and heaven are within thee
Air of the ages and child of the day
Cared for, watched over, beloved and protected
Walk thou with courage each step of the way

Truthful and steadfast though trials betide thee
Ever one thing do thou ask of thy Lord
Grace to go forward wherever he may guide thee
Gladly obeying the call of this word

Healed is thy hardness, his love hath dissolved it
Full is the promise, the blessing how kind
So shall his tenderness teach thee compassion
So all the merciful mercy shall find.

I Awake Each Morn (Tender Mercies)
Music and Words by Susan Mack

I awake each morn to a brand new day
Singing Hallelujah as I go on my way
For my heart is fixed on this one guarantee
The Love that is all holds me tenderly

Tender Mercies, oh tender mercies
Tender mercies are holding me
Tender mercies, oh tender mercies
Tender mercies are holding me

I can walk with Love through the valley of fear
Singing Hallelujah my Savior is here
The desert of my longing no hope can fulfill
But Love meets all need and bids want be still.

So no matter the need and no matter the threat
I’m secure in your love, no fear, no regret
Can there be a sweeter comfort a grace more divine
Than the thought that your love is here and is mine?

O May We Be Still and Seek Him
Music: Traditional
Words by Fay Linn

O May we be still and seek him
Seek with consecration whole
Listening thus to hear the message
Far from sense and hid in soul

He hath promised, we shall find him
Love divine its promise keep
God is watching with the watchful
God is life that never sleeps

If we pray to him in secret
Lift to him our heart’s desires
We shall find our earthly longings
All made pure by love’s pure fire

Then upon the precious metal
God’s own image will appear
Faithfully to him reflected
One in him forever near

Prayer (All Before Me Peaceful)
Music and Words by Josh Bogin

The curtain of daybreak it is hanging
The wind it whispers a morning grace
Before the sky you will find me standing
Let me live in this holy place

All before me peaceful, all behind me peaceful
Under me peaceful, over me peaceful,
All around me peaceful, all around me peaceful

In the house of freedom there are wanderers
In the house of life shall I pass my days
In old age traveling there I wander
Walk with me in this holy place

Homeward now down this road I wander
Where my souls long line are deeply traced
Homeward now shall I make my journey
Lo, yonder this holy place

In Heavenly Love Abiding
Music by Alexander Ewing
Lyrics by Anna L. Waring

In heavenly Love abiding, no change my heart shall fear;
And safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid;
But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?

Wherever He may guide me, no want shall turn me back;
My Shepherd is beside me, and nothing can I lack.
His wisdom ever waketh, his sight is never dim;
He knows the way He taketh, and I will walk with Him.

Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen;
Bright skies will soon be o’er me, where darkest clouds have been.
My hope I cannot measure, my path in life is free;
My Father has my treasure, and He will walk with me.
