A Rambler's Soul, and its songwriters Mark Henderson and Lou Stant, are a study in contrast,...contrast not in the sense of that which may be incompatible, but, conversely, in that which is mysteriously drawn together in a kind of completion. Consider the eerie shadowy quality of "The Limberlost" providing the reverse foil for the jaunty lightness that follows in "Pip's Theme", ...the lackadaisical humor in "Leavin' Indiana" as compared to the aching seriousness in "Goin' West"... the sweet affirmation that opens the album in Lou's "Ain't Life Grand", as compared to the more somber, and ultimately thunderous musicality in Mark's musical arrangement in "Come to the Water", which closes the album, ...Mark's gift of melody as an underlayment to Lou's penchant for lyric in such jewels as "Crosses" and "Monica", ...Mark's pop sensibility grafted to Lou's folk tendency. A discerning listener can sense a yin-yang quality to what they have accomplished here,..... a sense that one style may be incomplete without the other. It is rare feat for two songwriters to achieve such a striking collaboration.
