Gather Us In

Susan Millard Schwarz  •  Album

“’Gather Us In’is a compilation of some of my favorite inspirational songs which include texts from a broad range of faith traditions. It is a collaborative effort of outstanding musicians from central Ohio: Susan Frost – piano, WFM Composer Brett Allen – viola, David Schmoll – keyboard and guitar, Lisa Jelle – flute, and John McBride – Bodhrán. Together, I believe we have created a beautiful expression of God’s love and grace for all. It is a privilege to share it with you.” ~Susan Millard Schwarz

Music by John Ness Beck, transcribed by Craig Courtney
Lyrics adapted from Micah 6

With what shall I come before the Lord

And bow myself before God on high?

Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings

Shall I come before Him with yearling calves?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams
With ten thousand rivers of oil?

Shall I give Him my firstborn for my transgressions
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has shown you, O man;

He has shown you what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, and to love kindness
And to walk humbly

Walk humbly with your God.

The King of Love My Shepherd Is
Music by John Ness Beck, transcribed by Craig Courtney
Lyrics adapted from Psalm 23 by St Columba

The King of love my shepherd is
Whose goodness faileth never
I nothing lack if I am His

And He is mine forever.
Where streams of living waters flow
My ransomed soul He leadeth
And, where the verdant pastures grow
With food celestial feedeth.
In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
With Thee, dear Lord, beside me
Thy rod and staff my comfort still
Thy cross before to guide me.
And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never:

Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise
Within Thy house forever.

Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee
Music by Dale Wood
Lyrics by Bernard of Clairvaux, transcribed by Edward Caswall

Jesus, the very thought of Thee
With sweetness fills my breast
But sweeter far Thy face to see
And in Thy presence rest.

No voice can sing, no heart can frame
Nor mem’ry find a sweeter sound
Than Thy blest name,
O Saviour of mankind!

O hope of ev’ry contrite heart
O joy of all the meek
To those who fall, how kind Thou art

How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find?

Ah, this nor tongue nor pen can show;

The love of Jesus, what it is
None but His loved ones know.
Jesus, our only joy be Thou
As Thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus, be Thou our glory now
And through eternity!

Thus I Will Bless Thee
Music by Greg Granoff
Lyrics adapted from Psalms 42 and 63

O God, Thou art my God
Early will I seek Thee;
 early will I seek Thee.

My flesh longs for Thee
in a dry and thirsty land
My soul thirsts for Thee,
 my soul thirsts for Thee.

Yet the Lord will command
His lovingkindness in the daytime

And in the night His song shall be with me
And my prayer unto the God of my life.
Thus I will bless Thee while I live
I will lift up my hands in Thy name.

Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life
My lips shall sing praise to Thee.
My soul thirsts for God
My tears have been my meat day and night
While they continuously say unto me,
“Where is thy God?”
Why art thou cast down, O my soul?

Why art thou disquieted within me?

Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him
Shall yet praise Him

Who is the health of my countenance
and my God.
Thus I will bless Thee while I live

I will lift up my hands in Thy name.

Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life
My lips shall sing praise to Thee.

The Lord’s Prayer
Music by Albert Hay Malotte
Lyrics from Matthew 6

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed by Thy name.

Thy kingdom come

Thy will be done in earth
As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts

As we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For Thine is the Kingdom

And the power
And the glory, forever.

Simple Song (from MASS)
Music and Lyrics by Leonard Bernstein

Sing God a simple song, Lauda, Laudē
Make it up as you go along, Lauda, Laudē
Sing like you like to sing.

God loves all simple things

For God is the simplest of all
For God is the simplest of all.
I will sing the Lord a new song
To praise Him

To bless Him
To bless the Lord.
I will sing His praises while I live

All of my days.

Blessed is the man who loves the Lord
Blessed is the man who praises Him.
Lauda, Lauda, Laudē
And walks in His ways.

I will lift up my eyes

To the hills from whence comes my help.
I will lift up my voice to the Lord
Singing Lauda, Laudē.

For the Lord is my shade

Is the shade upon my right hand

And the sun shall not smite me by day
Nor the moon by night.

Blessed is the man who loves the Lord
Lauda, Lauda, Laudē
And walks in His ways.

Lauda, Lauda, Laudē

Lauda, Lauda di da di day

All of my days.

Music by Aminadov Aloni
Lyrics by Gates of Prayer, a Reform Jewish Siddur

Bar’chu et Adonai ham’vorach.

Baruch Adonai ham’vorach l’olam vaed.
Eternal God, Your majesty is proclaimed
By the marvels of earth and sky
Sun, moon and stars testify
To Your power and wisdom.

Day follows day in endless succession
And the years vanish
But Your sov’reignty endures.
Umaavir yom umevi lailah
Umaudil bein yom uvein lailah.
Adonai tsvaot sh’mo

El chai v’kayam
Tamid yimloch aleinu l’olam vaed.
Baruch ata Adonai

Baruch hu uvaruch sh’mo
Hamaariv aravim.

Blessed is the eternal God
To Whom our praise is due!

Blessed is the eternal God
To Whom our praise is due forever and ever!
Creator of day and night

Who rolls light away from darkness
And darkness from light
You cause day to pass, and bring about night

Distinguishing between them
“Almighty” is Your name.

O living and ever-enduring God
Reign over us forever and ever.

Blessed are You, Eternal One

Who brings on twilight.

Communion Hymn
Music by Greg Granoff
Words by Mary Baker Eddy

Saw ye my Saviour? Heard ye the glad sound?
Felt ye the power of the Word?
‘Twas the Truth that made us free, And was found by you and me
In the life and the love of our Lord

Mourner, it calls you, “Come to my bosom,
Love wipes your tears all away
And will lift the shade of gloom, And for you make radiant room
Midst the glories of one endless day”

Sinner, it calls you, “Come to this fountain,
Cleanse the foul senses within
“tis the Spirit that makes pure, That exalts thee, and will cure
All thy sorrow, and sickness and sin”

Strongest deliverer, friend of the friendless
Life of all being divine
Thou the Christ, and not the creed; Thou the Truth in thought and deed;
Thou the water, the bread, and the wine.

Lord, You Have Searched Me and Known Me
Music by Daniel Burton
Lyrics adapted from Psalm 139

Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know my sitting and my rising
You understand my thought from afar.
There is no word, word on my tongue
But You, O Lord, know it all.

Lord, You have searched me and known me

Searched me and known me.

You, Lord, have strengthened me behind and before
Strengthened and laid Your hand upon me;
Strengthened, strengthened and laid Your hand upon me.
Lord, You have searched me and known me
Searched me and known me.

If I take the wings of the morning
And fly to the farthest sea
Even there Your hand will lead me

And Your right hand will hold me.

Lord, You have searched me and known me

Searched me and known me.

Elí, Elí
Music by David Zahavi
Lyrics by Hannah Szenes

Elí, Elí shelo yigamer l’olam

Hachol v’hayam
Rishrush shel hamayim
B’rak hashamayim
T’filat haadam.

O Lord, my God, I pray that these things never end:
The sand and the sea

The rush of the water

The crash of the heavens
The prayer of the heart.

Gather Us In
Music and Lyrics by Marty Haugen

Here in this place new light is streaming
Now is the darkness vanished away
See in this space our fears and our dreamings
Brought here to You in the light of this day.
Gather us in — the lost and forsaken
Gather us in — the blind and the lame
Call to us now, and we shall awaken
We shall arise at the sound of our name.
We are the young – our lives are a mystery
We are the old – who yearn for Your face

We have been sung throughout all of history
Called to be light to the whole human race.
Gather us in – the rich and the haughty
Gather us in – the proud and the strong
Give us a heart, so meek and so lowly
Give us the courage to enter the song.
Here we will take the wine and the water

Here we will take the bread of new birth

Here You shall call Your sons and Your daughters
Call us anew to be salt for the earth.
Give us to drink the wine of compassion
Give us to eat the bread that is You
Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion
Lives that are holy and hearts that are true.
Not in the dark of buildings confining

Not in some heaven, light years away

But here in this place the new light is shining
Now is the Kingdom, now is the day.
Gather us in and hold us forever
Gather us in and make us Your own
Gather us in – all peoples together
Fire of love in our flesh and our bone.
