If I had been there, taxing the masses
And amassing the profits, would I abdicate the seat that ruled the coffers
Would I answer the call, could I levy it all
Would I wager my life, and earn the wages born of sacrifice

Could I let go my curse
Open palms and empty purse
For once an honest cheater
Would I render unto Jesus what was Caesar’s

If it had been me, would I have believed
Could I have seen who was before me
If I had been called by the son of God
Would I have given it all, to follow Jesus

If I had been there lowering my pail
To retrieve from Jacob’s well a simple drink of water for a stranger
Would I have let down my guard, would I have opened up my heart
Would the whispers of neighbors have kept me from speaking with my Savior

Would I have poured out my past
To quench the thirst that lasts
Would I have taken the chance to savor
The living drop of water from my maker
