Apple Trees in December

Our ancient apple trees are bare;
And shivering through the winter storm
We watch them stand, all unaware
Quiescent fire keeps them warm.
So through the winters of the world
When blizzards of confusion blow
May current of the Christmas fire
Blossom, leaf, and fruit bestow.
O deck the balsam, pine, and fir,
Green-ever hope for peace on earth,
But love the bare-limbed apple for
Its Christmas promise of rebirth.
