A rare poem by founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy; this piece reflects the spiritual need to find support in Divine Love, and through prayer are inner light can be rekindled. The soul’s eternal light can pierce through the darkest moments, and nothing can keep your light from shining.

Lyrics

Gethsemane
Poem by: Mary Baker Eddy (formerly known as Mary M.B. Glover)
Composer: Michelle J. Gonzalez

Hear, Father, hear my cry!
Darkness doth lower,
Oh, let the soul draw nigh man,
In this hour.

Calmly the feet may tread,
Where soul hath trod,
Over earth-woe and dread,
In its pure God;

In its unworldly love,
Bearing the cross,
Weighing the good, above
All that is loss.

Loss that is God to gain,
Cross that is crown;
Truth taken up through pain,
Error laid down.

Father, the “cup” to drink –
And when betrayed,
At the cross I shrink –
Oh, give me aid!

Thus let the soul, man’s sun,
Piercing the gloom,
Shine when the day is done
Bright as noon.
