Lyrics

HE’S COMING BACK

Music and lyrics by Steve Schalchlin & Avril Roy-Smith
Music by Steve Schalchlin

I sent my kid back to Iraq this morning.
Then drove home through the coastal L.A. gloom.
He’d bought a ton of xbox and nintendo.
And they populate that mess he calls a room.

He’s only at the mid-point of deployment.
I confess it was a parent’s private joy.
In just two days, this man, this Army Captain,
Turned back into my carefree little boy.

CHORUS
(As I) sort through all the games and toys
He scattered on this floor,
He said these hold the hopes that I now lack.
The things he left here
Means he’s coming back
He’s coming back.

My boy will be back in a tent tomorrow.
A tent behind a great big concrete wall.
He’ll watch a screen that looks just like Nintendo.
When it’s time to go to battle, it’s his call.

He doesn’t think about the war, he’s just a soldier.
And he’s there because, well, someone has to be.
He thinks about his duty to his comrades.
But he knows, in war, there is no guarantee.

CHORUS
And as I wipe away the tear drops
Falling here upon his floor,
My hopes are tied up in one simple fact:
The things he left here
Means he’s coming back.
Coming back.

In games they give you extra lives
As you complete each task.
But as he sends his brothers out,
That’s more than he can ask.

CHORUS
So I’m gonna leave his games and toys
All scattered on the floor
For when I feel my hopes turn gray to black.
The things he left here
Means he’s coming back.
Coming back.
