A dramatic contrast of the story of Jesus healing Jairus' daughter with a hymn-like treatment of the text "God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind…" Powerful and moving.

The Spirit of Power

Lyrics: 2 Timothy 1:7, Luke 8:40-42, 49-55, Adapted by Peter B. Allen
Composer: Peter B. Allen

For God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
For God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
And of a sound mind. A spirit of power and love, and of a sound mind.

And it came to pass, that, when Jesus came back a crowd was waiting for him.
And a man named Jairus, a leader of the people, came and fell down at Jesus’ feet,
And begged him to come to his house since his daughter, his only child, was dying.

And as Jesus was talking, a man from the house came and said;
“Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher now.”
But when Jesus heard this, he said,
“Don’t be afraid; Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she’ll be all right. She’ll be all right.”

When they came to the house, he let no one come in, but Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the child.
And all the people were crying and weeping for the girl, but Jesus said,
“Do not cry. She’s not dead, she is sleeping.”

And they laughed at him for they knew she was dead.
And he threw them out, and took her hand, and said to her, “Stand up my child.”
And she came back to life, and stood up. For God did not give us the spirit of fear,
But of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

For God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love,
And of a sound mind. And of a sound mind.
A spirit of power and love, and of a sound mind.
