This solo, which incorporates words from Jeremiah also used in the traditional spiritual "There Is a Balm in Gilead", laments the folly of those "wise men" who have forgotten the true healing power of God, but ends with hope, thanking God for the "living waters" that heal us all.

Lyrics

Wise Men Are Ashamed
Music by Glenn Hardy
Words from Jeremiah 8, 17 and Lamentations 3

The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord; and what wisdom is in them?

For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

O Lord, the hope of Israel, All that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from thee shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters.

Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me and I shall be saved:

Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.
