Remnants

In a recent move from NY to NJ, I had the chance to reorganize my past life into a huge file cabinet. I sat for a couple of weeks and poured over a lifetime of musical attempts and found a few of those forgotten gems, a few interesting unfinished scraps and musings that were worth development and a few favorites that simply got lost in the shuffle of life and never really made it to recorded completion.

Sometimes it was just a half a verse that caught my eye. Sometimes a lyric jumped out at me and said, “Please clarify me now that you’re older and wiser!” Sometimes a finished song just cried out and said, “Hey Pete, remember me? I’m still a winner after all these years molding at the bottom of this stack.” And sometimes it was just the thought of a song, a concept left forgotten. Once, it was a good lyric, but, for the life of me, I could not place the melody. So I wrote a new one.

All of these songs have been recently re-recorded and received new productions.

The only absolutely new song in the album is the first one. It is the title song for this concept album.

Remnants
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

And now I bring to you the remnants of a lifetime
The remnants of a lifetime
The fragments
The leftovers
The crumbs from the table
The leavings and remains
Of a time gone by

Songs of promise
Never finished
Molding away in old discolored notebooks
Once upon a time …
Once upon a time

Yeah once upon a time
They clamored for refinement
Some polish and revisions
My much-forgotten verses
And half-baked ideas
They cried, “Don’t leave me now!
Left behind
Never to find my way
Lost in the pages
Good for nothing
Fading away
And left alone to die”

So have a little listen to the remnants of my mind
Have a little listen to the remnants of a lifetime

Interlude

Yes these were songs and scraps of songs
That never found a home
Words that never made enough sense
Melodies left unattended
Until one day
I dreamt of resurrection
I could not leave my friends behind
And have them fade away
Fade away
Fade away
Fade away

So I had a little listen to the remnants of my mind
I had a little listen to the remnants of a lifetime

And so they rose on up from the ashes of a lifetime
These scraps and notes on napkins
Those scribbles on margins
Never remembered
Those musings of the mind
And the tunes left behind

So have a little listen to the remnants of my mind
Have a little listen to the remnants of a lifetime
Please enjoy my remnants
Please applaud their renaissance
Come celebrate their reincarnation
It’s not often that we all get a second chance
So grab on to the moment
Cuz It’s never too late to be born again

Please enjoy my remnants
Please applaud their renaissance
Come celebrate their reincarnation
It’s not often that we all get a second chance
So grab on to the moment
Cuz It’s never too late to be born again

III (Descant)
Have a little listen to the remnants of my mind
Have a little listen to my mind
Have a little listen to the remnants
Cuz It’s never too late to be born again

IV (Descant)
Have a little listen to the remnants of my mind
Have a little listen to my mind
Have a little listen to the moments
Cuz It’s never too late to be born again

IV (Jenny Adds)
Listen up people
To the Remnants
Have a little listen
Whoa!
It’s never too late
It’s never too late
It’s never too late

V (Descant)
Have a little listen to the remnants of my mind
Have a little listen to my mind
Have a little listen to the moments
Cuz It’s never too late to be born again

Angelina
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Angelina
Why so distant and cool
Signorina
Making me feel a fool

What could I do
I was sincere but naive
She seemed so helpless
I was a fool to believe

I confess to my sins
I admit to my slip
But I just did not see
Her come on to me

Nothing happened
I can assure you of that
Signorina
I only took off my hat

Angelina I’m yours
And I’m down on my knees
Begging you to please, please
Believe in me

So c’mon home
I’ll be waiting
With a rose on your pillow
Saying “I love you”
Hey it’s me
Angelina
I’m the one who had vowed
Always to cherish you

Baring the things we bared
Doing the things we dared
Loving the love we shared
In that precious space
There in the afterglow

Angelina
Don’t forget now my heart
You’re my lifeline
I will not let you go

Angelina
It wasn’t what you believed
I was faithful
Don’t let your heart break free
Angelina no
Don’t tear your heart from me
Don’t let this lifeline go
I’m still the one you know
There in the afterglow

Angelina
Darlin’ I love you

Anthem
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

She lives in my heart always
She lies in the long grass
She weeps and my world crumbles
But when she smiles
Then the sun dances with the moon

She’s warm on a cold morning
There lying beside me
I wake from my old slumber
And cherish this wrinkle in time
That’s over too soon

She is soooooooo sweet
She is soooooooo smooth indeed
Soooooooo tuned
To the birds in our window
She is all girl
All a whirl
And she’s all I’ve ever wanted
Never knowing what I wanted
Till she smiled at me

She laughs and the sky tumbles
She lights up my world
But when she leaves I am lost and humbled
Biding my time
Counting the days
Watching the clock
Checking the phone
Wishing the hours away
Till she comes home again
Till she comes home again

Interlude

I wake on this cold morning
And cling to that mem’ry
Of that girl in the grass
And her smile and her laughs
And the sun dancing with the moon

All together now fly
All together now fly
Won’t you let me fly again

All together now

Silver bird he
Sing on the sea
Yellow bird he
Fly at the red sun
Light bird
Come fly with me

All together now fly
All together now fly
All together now fly with me

All together now
Fly
All together now
Fly
All together now
Fly

All together now
Fly

Lady In Waiting
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

How old is a soul? We hear it said, “He’s an old soul.” And just how old is that? I’m thinking the soul is timeless … eternal … never to die … and never to be born. A soul just … is.

Back in my 20s I was in L.A. and had just finished an album at Capital Records when I ran into an old friend from high school who invited me to spend the weekend with her and her family. She had a daughter, Julie, a precocious toddler … I’ll never forget …

I fell in love with Julie
She was only four years old
I felt her look right through me
To the marrow of my soul

And as I brushed the hair away
That kept her eye from me
In a deep and single moment
I saw all there was to see

There’s a woman in there
Full ripe and warm
There’s a lady in waiting
In a baby just born

Oh mother mother
Your daughter has my eye
And I feel like I’m born
Twenty years twenty years
Ahead of my time

She watches me when I’m laughing with her mother
I tuck her into bed every night
She comes on tip toes early every morning
And silently waits
For the opening of my eyes

I fell in love with Julie
With the wonder of her gaze
The consequence of ages
Seemed to vanish in the haze

There’s a lady in waiting
In a baby just born
There’s a lady in waiting
In a baby just born
There’s a lady in waiting
Waiting to be free

Shadows Away
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

All my life I’ve lived like a child
Who’s safe in the arms of his mother
Now the feeling has gone away
Now I’m coming of age
Now I’m facing the great unknown
Now I’m taking the stage

May mother’s light be with me tonight
And chase all the shadows away lord
Shine a little light on me
Shadows away
Shine a little light on me
Shadows away

Here I am a child in a man
And don’t know the one from the other
Sometimes feeling a boy again
Sometimes acting my age
Sometimes silly old me again
Sometimes playing the sage

Wisdom’s child he comes and he goes
And one never knows where to find him
So shine a little light on me
Shadows away
Shine a little light on me
Shadows away
And let me be
Let me be
Closer to Thee
And in the final hour
Let me be me

Time will tell the shadows will fall
The mysteries all will be over
So shine a little light on me
Shadows away
Shine a little light on me
Shadows away

Cardinal In The Snow
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

There’s nothing quite like
A cardinal in the snow
All that white
And God’s splash of red
As if He had said
“Here is my thought for the day.”
A cardinal in the snow
Oh a cardinal in the snow
A cardinal in the snow

Bird in my window
More magnificent than the mountains
More beautiful than the valleys
And the rivers
And the wonders of this world
Bird in my window
Only for a second or two
But burned into the scrapbook of my being

Oh dear God
Thanks for making it so
He’s even more beautiful than Marilyn Monroe
This cardinal in the snow
Even more so than the willow tree
Even more so than Van Gogh
This cardinal in the snow

Interlude

A cardinal in the snow
Oh a cardinal in the snow
A cardinal in the snow

Bird in my window
More delicate than the snowflakes
A graceful ballerina
Standing mighty
A King among his peers
Bird in my window
Guardian of his family name
He’s burned into the mem’ry of my mind

A cardinal in the snow
A cardinal in the snow

Round In Circles
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Ah everybody knows
Sure as sin
So everybody’s tryin’
To put their two cents in

But nobody knows
The love I’ve found
Can’t imagine life
Without you around

I never knew the reason for the rain
I never knew my heart could feel such pain
Mama says, “you’re no good for me”
So what’ll it be?

I never knew that love could feel like this
Never knew the chaos of one kiss
Daddy says, “Boy, find someone new.”
So what’ll we do?

I guess I’m goin’ ‘round in circles
Runnin’ around in circles
‘Round an’ ‘round in circles
Over you

Instrumental Bridge

I never knew the meaning of the moon
I never knew that love could come so soon
Sister says, “Boy, don’t be a fool.”
So whaddo I do?

I guess I’m goin’ ‘round in circles
Runnin’ around in circles
‘Round an’ ‘round in circles
Over you

Yeah everybody knows
Sure as sin
So everybody’s tryin’
Ta put their two cents in

But nobody knows
The love I’ve found
Can’t imagine life
Without you around

Yeah it’s got me goin’ ‘round in circles
Runnin’ around in circles
‘Round an’ ‘round in circles
Over you

I never knew the meaning of the moon
I never knew that love could come so soon
I never knew that love could feel like this
Oh I never knew the chaos of one kiss
No I never knew the reason for the rain
I never knew my heart
Could feel such pain

Words Upon the Wall
Music by Peter Link
Lyrics by Peter Link
Additional Lyrics by Mary Baker Eddy

I sit and ponder these words
Upon the wall
Burned into my memory
Throughout all these years
And the tears of a grateful heart
Fall through my life
As my joy springs forth
At the miracle of this humble simple truth

“Divine Love
always has met
and always will meet
every human need.”
That’s every human need
Words upon the wall
Words upon the wall

I sit and wonder what I would do
Without these words
These pure and simple certainties
That have carried me through
For the love that is in my heart
Fills up my life
And I stand here in awe
At the miracle of this humble simple truth

“Divine Love
always has met
and always will meet
every human need.”
That’s every human need

Words upon the wall
Calling out to me
Setting me free from my fears
Words upon the wall
Reassuring me
And setting me free through the years

Words upon the wall
“God is love”
Meeting all my needs
I stand in awe of these simple truths
These words upon the wall

The Only Dance There Is
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Old friend won’t you please surrender
And let the simple will of life be done
Put all your money on your sympathy to love
It’s the only dance there is

Old friend won’t you live for the moment
And leave your hollow fancies far behind
Build all your castles for an ever-changing world
Cause it’s the only dance there is

Let us be to all a brother
In spite of all our fears
Let us trust each one another
Let us spill our tears and watch them falling
As we laugh them from our lives
Let us find in time a brighter dream

Old friend won’t you trust in the moment
And even when your dreams fall apart
Plan all your life around the love that’s in your heart
Cause it’s the only dance there is

Let us live for one another
Let us heed the call
All are sisters all are brothers
The writing’s on the wall
To let the love all around us touch our lives
Let us live the life we’ve always dreamed

Old friend won’t you look all around you
And see this troubled world in all its strife
Let shine your beauty in the glory of your life
Cause it’s the only chance there is
It’s the only chance there is
It’s the only chance there is
It’s the only dance there is

Another Rain Song
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Wish I was a painter
With my canvas in the sky
I’d paint the heavens and the sea
The color of your eyes
And then I’d paint a little rain
All around the blue
And in between the gray
I’d have the sun come shinin’ through

Rain rain we need a little rain
Everything’s goin’ down a little too plain
And we need a little change
So rain rain we need a little rain
I love to see the sun shine
But we need a little rain

Wish I had a lifetime
To settle down with you
Where dreams would follow dreams
And wishes could come true
Ah but I know too well
This yearning that comes over me
Just about the time I’m finally here
I’m movin’ on

Rain rain we need a little rain
Everything’s goin’ down a little too plain
And we need a little change
So rain rain rain rain we need a little rain
I love to see the sun shine
But we need a little rain

Rain rain we need a little rain
Cause every time life gets too much the same
We need a little change
So rain rain rain rain we need a little rain
I love to see the blue sky
But I love to feel the rain
I love to see the sun shine
But we need a little rain rain rain

This Is All I Ask
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

I am a quiet man
A gentle man
Oh yes I’ve tried to live
By God’s own plan
Seeking the open sky
Giving me room to fly
On my own

And this is all I ask
For all I’ve known
Here on this tired earth
This rolling stone
Keeps me from rising up
From filling my rightful cup
On my own

So in my solitaire
My dark despair
I long for Thee
To take me there
Into the quiet sky
The open air
My liberty
This is all I ask of Thee
Yes this is all I ask

And when the time has come
When man shall stand
Each one and every one
As God’s own man
Then will my soul have flown
Then will I roll the stone
On my own

And when the sky rolls back
And opens wide
And I can touch the other side
And when the soul of man
Is one again
Forever free
This is where I long to be
This is all I ask
Forever free
Yes this is all I ask
