This anthem opens with wonderful sustaining pedals in the organ accompaniment to underscore, in a minor key, the gravity of God’s message of His commandment to the Children of Israel, exhorting them to have one God and to love only one God — and to teach this to their children.  The middle section changes to a major key and celebrates the proof of God’s love in His deliverance of His children out of the land of bondage with a final reminder to have one God -- expressed powerfully in a short modal return to the opening melody.

Lyrics

Hear, O Israel
Music by Glenn Hardy
Words from Deuteronomy 6 and Exodus 20

Hear O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, And shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, Out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Hear, O Israel: the Lord thy God is one Lord.
