Psalm VIII

Buy from Sheet Music Plus

Open octaves in the piano introduction and a bold, sweeping vocal line convey the mystery and wonder of creation. The song alternates between peaceful meditative phrases and broad heroic statements. The piece’s grand modulation from F major up a 3rd to A major as well as the climactic final high note in the voice evoke the Lord’s majesty “in all the earth.” Moderately difficult, beautiful setting of this text.

Lyrics

Psalm VIII

Composer Craig Courtney
Lyrics Psalm 8

O Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth
You have set Your glory above the heavens
From the mouths of children You have ordained praise to silence the foe
When I survey the heavens, the moon and stars You created
What are we that You are mindful of us?
For You have made us little lower than the angels
And crowned us with glory and honor
You have given us dominion o’er the works of Your hands
You have put all things under our feet
The flocks and herds, the beasts of the field
And the fowl of the air and the fish of the sea
All that swim the paths of the seas
O Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
