A Story Song from the Book Of Daniel. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the firey furnace. But the scent of smoke and flame was not upon them. For the illusion of the fourth man in the fire turns out not to be an illusion at all, but an absolute reality.

This solo is part of the Simple Truth solos project - a group of 16 solos Peter Link composed and then recorded with various artists in 2024 and 2025.

The Scent Of Smoke And Flame

Music and Lyrics by Peter Link
Story from the Book Of Daniel

The King set up a golden image of himself
And commanded all to bow down before it
And all of them who failed to do so
And all of them who failed to respect their king
Would be thrown into a fiery furnace

Then three of his most trusted men
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
Fearing not, and refusing to do so
They stood fast and so
They were brought before their angry king

The defiant three stood their ground
Knowing well
That God would always be with them>>>
They put their trust in God
And not the king

So now the king
Was more enraged with them than ever
And commanded that the three
Be fed to the flames
And thrown into the eager fiery furnace
Heated seven times more than normal
So all that would be left would be
The scent of smoke and flame
That would show the world who reigns

And so the king had his way
But when he looked
To watch the three men
Burn and turn to ashes
He saw four figures walking
Unharmed in the flames

“The fourth,” he said, “is like a son of God.”
“Surely, the fourth man
Must be an illusion
For how can this be so?”
How can this be so?

Seeing this,
He brought the youths out of the flames
And the fire had in no way burned their bodies
The hair of their heads was not singed
Not one thread of their clothing was harmed
(And) The scent of smoke and flame was not upon them
The scent of smoke and flame was not upon them

Oh mighty king
Who shall we bow down to now?
For the illusion of the fourth man in the fire
Turns out not to be an illusion at all
But an absolute reality
The only true illusion in the tale
Was the mighty fiery furnace
Heated seven times more than normal
Meant to burn the mortal bodies
And prove once and for all
Just who was the mightiest of all

But the scent of smoke and flame was not upon them
The scent of smoke and flame was not upon them
No, the scent of smoke and flame was not upon them
