A bystander tells the Bible story of a woman caught in adultery who is about to be stoned. Upbeat and thought-provoking: who will cast the first stone? |

Cast the First Stone
Music by Dinah Satterwhite
Words from John 8: 1-11
This morning I rose from my bed
I’m going to see Jesus today
I’ve longed so to hear what he said
He’ll teach us and heal us I pray
The temple was filled with such light
A soft wash of color so warm
But something was really not right
A crowd rumbled much like a storm
Making my way to the side
Past faces of hate and of fear
I saw Jesus circled inside
Stooped down as if he could not hear
Only cast the first stone
If you have not sinned
If you’re free of doubt
If you’re pure of heart
Or can you forgive
Be humble with grace
Can pride be erased
Who will cast the first stone?
A man told me of a great wrong
His wife was not faithful to him
She cheated and he won’t wait long
With his fist full of rocks, his face grim
The woman looked lost and alone
Our Master was asked what to do
The law said that she should be stoned
Dear Jesus please say what is true
Jesus stood up he and declared
“If you have no sin to be found
Then cast the first stone here and now”
He stooped down to write on the ground
The room became silent somehow
They left one by one with no sound
Each one finding guilt of their own
I reached the door and looked around
At a room full of one hundred stones
“Where have they gone?” Jesus said
“Had they not thrown any stones?”
The woman she lifted her head
Saying “Master, no not even one”
Only cast the first stone
If you have not sinned
If you’re free of doubt
If you’re pure of heart
Or can you forgive
Be humble with grace
Can pride be erased
Who will cast the first stone?
The woman departed with grace
Forgiveness was all she asked for
She had thanked Him with tears on her face
And left, to do wrong no more
