Defender of Us All

A long time gone the people hear
a teacher’s words of life
that heal the sick, that wake the dazed,
and still the storm and strife.
His words can never fail or fall.
They live this hour, the same great pow’r,
defender of us all.

A long time gone where doves are sold–
the teacher cleared it off.
Strong action told a Master bold,
a counsel for defense–
restoring joy and lifting faith
to see our innocence.

A long time gone upon the street
are palm leaves from the crowd,
hosanna praise the children raise
this meek and royal way–
a government from heaven sent,
a Savior of us all.

O crucify him! Crucify him!
He says he is the Son of God!
O crucify him! Crucify him!
He says our kingdom is within!
Forgive, forgive, O hear the call
that sounds over dust and violent pall.
Forgive, they know not what they do!
It shatters the veil of ritual, too.
Brave one, face down the stony tomb!

A long time gone the women see
the tomb he left behind.
Disciples see the risen Lord
and humbly hear his Word.
His words can never fail or fall;
they live this hour, the same great pow’r,
defender of us all.
