Episode #26 – The Best of Julia Wade

with

Julia Wade

Peter Link talks with Julia about the making of this album and the special stories of each song, ranging over 2 decades of music-making.

Peter Link opens with these insights:

I have been wanting to release a Best of … album of Julia Wade now for about 5 years. Unfortunately, life has been so busy that we just never got around to it. But with 15 albums under her belt and over 200 Sacred, or at least inspirational, songs recorded and an ever changing audience, it finally seemed that it was just something that had to be done. So one day, a couple of months ago, I sat down with all 15 albums and gave them all a listen. This tremendous body of work actually took 3 days, because I enjoyed the experience so much that I had to listen to many of the songs twice. How to whittle all this material down to one album seemed an impossible task …

    Satisfied

    Lyrics by Mary Baker Eddy
    Music by Peter Link

It matters not what be thy lot,
    So Love doth guide;
    For storm or shine,
    pure peace is thine,
    What-e’er betide.

And of these stones, or tyrants’ thrones,
    God able is
To raise up seed—in thought and deed—
    To faithful His.

Aye, darkling sense, arise, go hence!
    Our God is good.
False fears are foes—truth tatters those,
    When understood.

Love looseth thee, and lifteth me,
    Ayont hate’s thrall:
    There Life is light,
    and wisdom might,
    And God is All.

    The centuries break,
    the earth-bound wake,
    God’s glorified!
Who doth His will—His likeness still—
    Is satisfied.

    Finding the Christ in Me
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Oh God to Thee I turn
    Touch now this life

    On bended knee
    I come to Thee
Lost in the dark of night
    Feeling you near
    I seek your care
    Under your wings of light
    Here is Christ
    Here in this light
    Watching over me
    In this state
    Truth is revealed
I’m seeking the Christ in Thee
And finding the Christ in me

    On bended knee
    I come to thee
    Seeking the narrow way
    I leave behind
    This mortal mind
    These tired feet of clay
    All my life
    I’ve tried to live
    Closer still to thee
    As I strive
    As I achieve
I’m seeking the Christ in Thee
And finding the Christ in me

    Here in my heart
    My heart of hearts
    Here in this quiet place
    Here’s where the Christ
    Abides with me
    Here in this silent grace
    God’s great love
    Shows me the way
    Here’s where I must be
    In this space
    In love’s embrace
I’m seeking the Christ in Thee
And finding the Christ in me

    Peace Be Still
    Music by Peter Link
    Lyrics Adapted from Mark 4
    Additional Lyrics by Peter Link

And when they had sent away the multitude,
They took the Master into a ship.
And there were also with him other little ships.
But then there arose a great storm
    And the waves beat down
    And the wind rose up
And the sea filled the ship
    Till the waters reigned

And the Master asleep on a pillow lay
While all of those around him lost hope
So they began to waken him and say to him
Oh Master why do you not care
    That we perish out here
    In a raging storm
    And the waters rise
    And the ship goes down
    Aaah

    And he arose
    And rebuked the wind
    And said unto the sea
    Peace be still
    Peace be still

    And the wind ceased
And there was a great calm
    And he said unto them
    Why are ye so fearful?
How is it that ye have no faith?

And so they esteemed him exceedingly,
And said to one another "Oh my
What manner of man is this who works such miracles
That even the wind and the sea obey him?"

    For he arose
    And rebuked the wind
    And said unto the sea
    Peace be still
    Peace be still

    The Palms
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

    On the way to Jerusalem
Thousands gathered to watch him go by
    On the way to Jerusalem
    There on the road
He carried the load of this world
As the colt carried him on his back
    Colt and rider
    Colt and rider
    Colt and rider
    On the dusty road

These are the palms of peace
Given in these times of strife
These are the palms we gathered
    Thanking you for your life

These are the palms of joy
Given in these times of trial
These are the palms of homage
    Bearing you mile to mile

    So lay down the palms
Make the earth clean and pure
    Lay down the palms
    Comes now the Christ
    Comes now the cure

These are the palms of dreams
Given in these times of doubt
These are the gifts we bring you
    For casting the shadows out

    Colt and rider
    hosanna in the highest
    Colt and rider
    hosanna in the highest
    Colt and rider
    hosanna hosanna hosanna hosanna
    On the dusty road

    Hosanna hosanna hosanna hosanna
    Hosanna hosanna hosanna hosanna

    Beauty

    Music by Peter Link

    The recipe for beauty
    is to have less illusion
    and more Soul

    The recipe for beauty
    is to have less illusion
    and more Soul

    Comeliness and grace
    are independent of matter.
Beauty is a thing of life,
which dwells forever in the eternal Mind
and reflects the charms of His goodness
    in expression, form,
    outline, and color.

    It is Love
    Love which paints the petal
    It is Love
    with myriad hues,
    glances in the warm sunbeam,
arches the cloud with the bow of beauty,
blazons the night with starry gems,
    and covers earth with loveliness.

    Love, redolent with unselfishness,
bathes all in beauty and light.

    It is Love
    Love which paints the petal
    It is Love
    with myriad hues,
    glances in the warm sunbeam,
arches the cloud with the bow of beauty,
blazons the night with starry gems,
    and covers earth with loveliness.

    Nothing
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

What is the chaff to the wheat?
    Nothing
What is the dross to the gold?
What is the darkness to light?
    Nothing
Nothing's still nothing a thousand fold

Nothing's no more than a fraud
Trying to be something when really it's nothing
Claiming existence with no real consistency
    What is matter to God?
    What is matter to God?
    Nothing
    Nothing

What is the false to the truth?
    Nothing
What are the tears to the crier?
What is an absence to presence?
    Nothing
What is the ash to the raging fire?

What is the gain if a million lives
Are lost while the world is obsessed making war?
What is the point? Dear Lord! What are the spoils?
What on earth is it for?
What on earth is it all for?
    Nothing
    Nothing

What is the past to the present?
    Nothing
What are the remnants of time?
What are the scraps and shavings of dreams
    Forgotten and long left behind?

What of a thought considered then spurned
And left in the dust forsaken?
What was it worth? What does it matter?
    If it was simply mistaken

    What is death to life?
    Nothing
What are the findings discovered by science?
What are the laws on which we place reliance
When we find the findings were flawed?
    What is matter to God?
    Nothing
    Nothing

What is the chaff to the wheat?
    Nothing

    Apacienta mis Ovejas
    Feed My Sheep

Texto inglés por Mary Baker Eddy
    Música por Peter Link

    La colina, di, Pastor,
    cómo he de subir;
    cómo a Tu rebaño yo
    debo apacentar.
    Fiel Tu voz escucharé,
    para nunca errar;
    y con gozo seguiré
    por el duro andar.

    La colina, di, Pastor,
    cómo he de subir.

    Lo rebelde rendirás,
    lo cruel herirás;
de su sueño al mundo habrás
    Tú de despertar.
    Extranjero en playa hostil,
    lucho con afán;
por la puerta entro al fin,
    y me aceptarás.

    La colina, di, Pastor
    cómo he de subir.

    En el triunfo o dolor,
    o en la oscuridad,
    guía a Tu rebaño hoy
    hacia Ti, Señor.
Sana el alma y danos pan
    hasta ver la luz;
    blancos Tus corderos van
    tras de Ti, Pastor.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Shepherd, show me how to go
    O’er the hillside steep,
How to gather, how to sow,—
    How to feed Thy sheep;
I will listen for Thy voice,
    Lest my footsteps stray;
    I will follow and rejoice
    All the rugged way.

Shepherd, show me how to go
    O’er the hillside steep.

Thou wilt bind the stubborn will,
    Wound the callous breast,
    Make self-righteousness be still,
    Break earth’s stupid rest.
    Strangers on a barren shore,
    Lab’ring long and lone,
We would enter by the door,
    And Thou know’st Thine own;

Shepherd, show me how to go
    O’er the hillside steep.

So, when day grows dark and cold,
    Tear or triumph harms,
Lead Thy lambkins to the fold,
    Take them in Thine arms;
Feed the hungry, heal the heart,
    Till the morning’s beam;
White as wool, ere they depart,
    Shepherd, wash them clean.

    Creation
    Text by Mary Baker Eddy
    Music by Peter Link

    There is but one creator
    And one creation.
    Infinite Mind is the creator,
And creation is the infinite image or idea
    Emanating from this Mind.
    There is but one creator
    And one creation.

    Creation is ever appearing,
And must ever continue to appear
From the nature of its inexhaustible source.

    This creation consists of
    The unfolding of spiritual ideas
    And their identities,
Which are embraced in the infinite Mind
    And forever reflected.

When we learn the way in Christian Science
    And recognize man's spiritual being,
We shall behold and understand God's creation, —
    All the glories of earth
    And heaven
    Earth and heaven and man.

    There is but one creator
    And one creation.
    And one creation.

    What Child Is This?
    Original Melody: Greensleves
    Lyrics by William C. Dix
Additional Music & Lyrics by Peter Link

What child is this who, laid to rest
    On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
    While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
    Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
    The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
    The cross be borne for me, for you;
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
What Child is this whom angels greet
This is the Christ, the king
So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh,
    Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
    Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
    The virgin sings her lullaby;
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
What Child is this whom angels greet
This is the Christ, the king
    What child is this
    On Mary’s lap lay sleeping

    I Was There
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

I was there on that morning by the sea
As the sun broke purple through the haze
I was there as they cast their nets in sorrow
    And the waters yeilded nothing
As the sky was all ablaze

I was there as he stood upon the shoreline
Watching those he loved struggle on
I was there as he whispered 'cross the waters
"cast your nets now on the right side
For the night is surely gone"

Yes I was there with the master
In the purple light of dawn
I was there as we all went struggling on

    I was there
And the catch that day was a billion souls
    And it's happening again
    He's teaching us to pray
    He's teaching us to heal
And then we too can be
    Fishers of men

I was there when he told them how he loved them
And his words burned a purpose in their hearts
As the fire turned to ashes then he left them
But the gift of god stayed with them
    In the inward parts

    I was there

    On Eagle's Wings
Music and Lyrics by Michael Joncas

    Chorus:
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Who abide in His shadow for life
Say to the Lord, "My refuge
My rock in whom I trust."

    [Chorus]

The snare of the fowler will never capture you
And famine will bring you no fear
    Under His wings your refuge
    His faithfulness your shield.

    [Chorus]

You need not fear the terror of the night
Nor the arrow that flies by day
    Though thousands fall about you
Near you it shall not come.

    [Chorus]

For to His angels He's given a command
To guard you in all of your ways
Upon their hands they will bear you up
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

    [Chorus]

In the palm of His hand.
