Scattershot Symphony Episode #49: Forgotten

Scattershot Symphony Podcast
Series 1

Episode #49: Forgotten

This podcast is about forgotten songs – remembered and celebrated once again. Listen and learn of their unique stories. Take the trip!

Just because something is forgotten does not necessarily mean that it’s not any good.

As the Earth turns on its axis, times change. What was up is now down. What was fast is now slow.

Great leaders are forgotten. Hitlers are remembered. Good times are forgotten. Struggles are remembered.

This podcast, Forgotten, is about forgotten songs.

Whenever I write a song that I end up not liking very much, I always throw it away. I never leave it around somewhere to be forgotten.

But I do have forgotten songs that I liked at the time that I wrote then but find that years later they might be best forgotten. Early works tend to be forgotten.

As the years have gone by gratefully, I’ve gotten better at what I do and so my standards are higher. Still it’s always great to find all these oldies but goodies.

Each of the forgotten has its own story. Here are 10.

Music in this Episode #49 comes from single songs: You Knock Me Off My Feet, Katherine Heburn, and from albums, Goin’ Home – On Heaven and Beyond, Sundown cast album and Silk Road – all produced by Peter Link with singers Jenny Burton, John James, Judy McLane, Steve Blanchard, and Julia Wade — and the maestro himself also singing throughout.

You Knock Me Off My Feet
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

You give it all you got
    You make my life complete
You always take your best shot
You knock me off my feet

    You took me under wing
    You loved and nurtured me
    You let my spirit sing
You knock me off my feet

In the way you bear me up
In the way you care for me
In the way you fill my cup
    You're always there
    You're always there for me

You clap me on the back
    You rub my shoulders free
    You fire up my brain
You knock me off my feet
You knock me off my feet
Proud to take you with me anywhere
    Oh yeah

You knock me off my feet
Even in the toughest of times you're there
    Lifting me back up
With the way you care for me
And the way you help me be
    All I can be

    Yeah even in the toughest
    Toughest of times
    You're there

    You're always comin' through
    You're all I dreamed you'd be
    I feel a hallelujah
    Rise up inside of me

In the way you let me fly
In the way you set me free
You throw me to the sky
    But you're always there
    You're always there for me

You give it all you got
    You make my life complete
You always take your best shot
You knock me off my feet

You knock me off my feet
    And set my spirit free
An' I'm so proud to take you with me anywhere

    Oh yeah
You knock me off my feet
Even in the toughest of times you're there
    Lifting me back up
With the way you care for me

And when I go from here
I'll always carry you with me
You make my life so clear
You give me all I need

    The way you've treated me
    Inspires me to go out
    And knock down doors
    You set my spirit free
You give it all to me
    An' I feel a hallelujah
    Yes I feel a hallelujah

    I can see
    All the saints from Philippi
    All the saints from Ephesus
    Saint John the Baptist
    Saint John the Divine

    All the saints of Buddha
    Milarepa the saint of Tibet

    Paramahansa Yogananda
Saint Tukaram and the Muslim saints
All the saints of all mankind

Walkin' in step with Hindu saints
    And Taoist saints
    And Sufi saints
With Mr. Louis Armstrong on trumpet
    Leadin' the way

Walkin' in step with the Hindu saints
    And Taoist saints
    And Sufi saints
With Mr. Louis Armstrong before them
    Blowin' his horn
    And none get left behind

They are traveling in the footsteps
    Of those who've gone before
    They will all be reunited
On a new and sunlit shore

There is hope that goes before them
And its banners fill the sky
    With a thousand million footsteps
    Echoing on high
And oh Lord I want to be in that number
    I got to be there

    When the
    When the
    When the
    When the

Oh when the saints go marching in
When the saints go marching in
Oh Lord I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

And when the sun begins to shine
When the sun begins to shine
Oh Lord I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

    Oh on that hallelujah day
    Yes on that hallelujah day
Oh Lord I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

    And when the revelation comes
    Yeah when that revelation comes
Oh Lord I want to be in that number
    When the revelation comes

Oh when the trumpet sounds the call
Oh when Louis Armstrong sounds that call
Oh Lord I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

Oh, when the saints go marching in
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

Oh, when the saints go marching in
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

    Bridges
    Lyrics by Larry Rossler
    Music by Peter Link

IF I’DA STAYED WITH THAT LAWYER
    OUT IN SANTE FE

HE WOULDA DRAPED ME IN JEWELRY
    AND I’D BE RICH TODAY
    I COULDA SEEN ATLANTIC CITY
    AND SARATOGA SPRINGS
AND IN TIME I’D HAVE FIVE BABIES
    TUGGING AT MY APRON STRINGS

PASSED UP A CHANCE WITH A HANDSOME
    KANSAS FARMER THAT I KNEW
I COULDA GOT TIED AND BEEN A BRIDE
IF I’DA ONLY SAID “I DO”
    COULDA RUSTLED UP HIS BREAKFAST
    FIXED SUPPER FOR HIS KIN
MAYBE PLANT SOME WHEAT AND BARLEY
WHILE I GREW A DOUBLE CHIN

I BEEN BURNIN’ BRIDGES BEHIND ME
AND THE TIME IS TICKIN’ ON
I WANT TO TAKE WHAT I CAN GET
BEFORE ALL MY BRIDGES ARE GONE
BEFORE ALL MY BRIDGES ARE GONE
BEFORE ALL MY BRIDGES ARE GONE

WHERE IS MY SOLDIER FROM TEXAS
WHO SWEPT ME OFF MY FEET?
WAS IT A SAILOR OR A TAILOR
    WHO LIVED ON BOURBON STREET?
WELL, I’VE HAD BEAUS BY THE BUSHEL
    AND LIFE AIN’T OVER YET
BUT THEN I LOOK THERE IN THE MIRROR
AND IT WON’T LET ME FORGET

I BEEN BURNIN’ BRIDGES BEHIND ME
AND THE TIME IS TICKIN’ ON
I BETTER TAKE WHAT I CAN GET
BEFORE ALL MY BRIDGES ARE GONE
BEFORE ALL MY BRIDGES ARE GONE
BEFORE ALL MY BRIDGES ARE GONE

    On My Way Home
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

[Enter a man, either Middle Eastern or North African, dressed in an expensive subtly pinstriped suit, white dress shirt, no tie. He’s elegant and from all manner looks to have been a most successful business man, however his suit is filthy, perhaps torn, his shirt has been on his back for days and is dirty and stained, and a rough stubble completes his unshaven presence.]

    Look at this face
    Look at these dirty clothes
Look at these worn out shoes
Ah yes, I'm one of those

    Just look at this face
    Look at these filthy clothes
Look at these worn out shoes

I come to you by land, by sea
    On foot, I come
    By raft, I come
    A refugee
    I seek your asylum
    A cup of your kindness
I come from a place of nothing but blindness

    I run for my life
    A flight into exile
A fugitive from the heart of darkness
My lot in life, yes, a refugee
    My future, so far, unknown
I live in a chaos that spans the world

I look to find my family
I search to find the man I used to be

I know so well this road of desperation
I carry what little hope that's left
    In my frail imagination

And I carry my past life
In this pack up on my back
    I carry my past life
    In a sack

With all that I've worked for
    Gone
    All that I've fought for
    Gone
And all that I've lived for
    Gone

    Here am I
    A man of no place
    Lost out here in space
    But on my way home

    Look at these hands
So sad what this life can bring
    Look at these wasted hands
These hands that have built such things

    And look in this heart
This heart of a worthwhile man
    Look at this broken heart

I offer you a man of dignity
    A fruitful life I’ve lived
    But now, a refugee
    I seek your asylum
    I seek your compliance
I beg you renounce your thoughts of defiance

    What I’ve left behind …
    A life of such promise
A family with its long traditions
But along the way, yes, I’ve let them go
    My future, so far, unknown
To live now in peace is my only need

Each night before I sleep I ask
What wrong I must have done that brought me here

I cannot find the answer to this question
I carry this damning pain of guilt
    Like a rancorous obsession

And so I run from my past life
Yeah, from one to the next
    Confused and disheartened
    So perplexed …

And all that I've loved now
    Gone
And all of my dreams now
    Gone
My life as I knew it
    Gone

    Here am I
    A man of no place
    Lost out here in space
    But on my way home

    Afghanistan
    Somalia
    Iraq
    Sudan

I come to you, a man
    Trying to stay alive
    Trying my best to survive
While I’m on my way home
    I’m goin’ home
    Lookin’ for a new home
Yes I’m on my way home

    Yeah I’m goin’ home
    I’m goin’ home
    Ooh I’m goin’ home
    Aaaaahhhhh
    I’m goin’ home

    Poison Water
    Words by Larry Rosler
    Music by Peter Link

    [Doc]
    Lord, you know I tried
    Did my very best
    To turn the other cheek
    As you suggest
But love your enemy's a hard request
When he's reaching for his gun

    Here I go again
    And it makes me sad
    To say goodbye
To all the dreams we had
    So how did something good
    Turn out so bad
Take a look at what we've done

    Poisoned the water
    Poisoned the water
    Look at us now
    We've poisoned the water
    Poisoned water
    Full of waste
Let them come and get a taste
    Of poison water

    [Tom]
    Mother of mercy-

    [Doc]
Relax, Tom. Just relax. We don't want to wake the lady.

    [Tom]
But I'm unarmed. You know China Mary don't allow no guns in her rooms. You ain't gonna shoot an unarmed man, are ya? Are ya?

    [Doc]
I'm here to extend an invitation: you meet me later today, and we'll settle the score for all time.

    [Morgan]
Virg, what they done to Kate ain't right.

    [Virgil]
And what they do to one of us, they do to all.

    [Morgan]
    We should end it now

    [Virgil]
    We should do it quick
And when we do it, dammit, make it stick

    [Morgan]
A little piece of lead should do the trick

    [Virgil]
That's the gospel truth my son

    [Tom]
Gentlemen, this time Doc Holliday has called out the wrong man.

    [Ike]
The wrong house, Tom, the wrong house.

    [Frank]
    Turn your back on wolves
    This is what you git

    [Ike]
    You touch a rattlesnake
    And you get bit

    [Tom & Ike]
The talking's over now we finish it
Take a look at what they've done

    [Clantons, McLaurys, Morgan & Virgil]
    Poisoned the water
    Poisoned the water
    Look at them now
    They've poisoned the water
    Poisoned water
    Full of waste
Let them come and get a taste
    Of poison water

    [Wyatt]
    You hear that?

    [Wyatt]
It's the sound of hearts beatin' faster right before a kill. I love that sound. I'll round up the boys, Doc. Don't be long.

    [Kate]
    Doc, it's not too late
    Not for us
    Cause I know
    We can make it, Doc
    Please don't go
    What of all those dreams
    Of getting out
    Cutting ties

    [Woman in Black]
    They were only pretty lies
Just a pack of pretty lies

    [Kate]
I ain't going to bury you. If you go down there, I gotta walk out on you.

    [Doc]
    I have no choice, Kate.

    [Woman in Black]
    See the minute hand
    Moving on the clock
Too late to close the door
    And turn the lock
    It's what you wanted
    Are you ready, Doc?

    [Earps]
    Yeah, today they're gonna pay

    [Clantons & McLaurys]
    Yeah, today they're gonna pay

    [All]
At a place they call OK
    Cause they
    Poisoned the water
    Poisoned the water
We know just who poisoned the water
    Poisoned water's got to kill
Let them come and drink their fill
    Of poisoned water

    Let the water go
    Let that poison flow

    There Was You
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Heartbreak came so easy to one so young
    Love had turned quite contrary
    To a young girl's dreams
So I gathered up what was left
    And moved warily on
    A change of scene
    A change of dream

A new start to a new life was all I asked
    Love would be quite suspended
    In this young girl's life
But the world does not always work
In all the ways that we want
    Too soon we met
    Too soon too soon

    I shook your hand
    I caught your smile
The voice inside me screamed "No, no!"
While my heart danced in midair
    I barred the door
    Refused to look
    I knew I didn't dare
I searched the floor for answers
And I found you standing there
    So there was you
    There you were
    There on that Sunday afternoon

But love was still too dangerous
    Too hazardous
    Too perilous
And I far too vulnerable to let go
When I chanced to look again
    You were gone
    You were gone
    So I moved warily on

As time went by I wondered
    "Hey! Where'd he go?"
Love's no longer quite so daunting
    To a young girl's heart
I had missed my chance botched it up
And now it was too late
    My timing bad
    Too late too late

    And then came fate
    Or God's design
We came to meet by chance again
    And I caught you unaware
    You passed me by
    I called your name
    From somewhere in midair
You see I'd searched my heart for answers
And I found you standing there
    Yes there was you
    There you were
    There - not too late
    Not too soon
    There on that Sunday afternoon

    For the Birds
Music and Lyrics by Peter Link

Tweedle ee deet 'n' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee (x2)

This song is for the birds
This song is for the birds

This song is for the birds
This song is for the birds

There's a blue jay on my doorstep
    Tryin' to steal the laces
    Off my runnin' shoes
    He's some kinda mad kleptomaniac
He can't help it cause it's in his genes
    He don't read the magazines
So he don't know what kleptomania means

    Clear of conscience,
    But still guilty as sin.

So this song is for the birds
This song is for the birds

There's a hummingbird at my window
Lookin' at me while I write this song
    And we're eyeball to eyeball

Listenin' to his wings beat the rhythm of life
Listenin' to his wings beat the rhythm of life
Listenin' to his wings beat the rhythm of life
    Hummingbird
    Hmmmmmmmmm
    Hummingbird
    Hmmmmmmmmm
    Hummingbird

Tweedle ee deet 'n' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee (x2)

    Birds:

They don't know where they come from
Don't know where they're goin' to
    Don't have time to wonder
Too busy flyin' at the moon
    Too busy tryin' to prune
    Too busy workin'
    For the early mornin' worms
    Singin'
Baby I'll be comin' home soon

So this song is for the birds
This song is for the birds

    There's a woodpecker peckin'
On the side a' my house
Puttin' a hole where there ain't one
    An' it ain't very nice
I already got me some mice
And they're fillin' my life with their holes

    Just like the moles.

    And oh what a mess
    But I got to confess
    That I tend to digress

    Point being:

This song is for the birds
This song is for the birds

There's an eagle in my back yard
    Wonderin' what became of america
He's got the whole world on his shoulders
Musta gone bald thinkin' about the A-bomb
Musta gone bald just tryin' ta' stay calm
    He's still worryin' about Vietnam

    Somebody oughta tell 'im.
    The war's over.

And this song is for the birds
This song is for the birds

Each mornin' they sing a new symphony
It's a soaring cantata to the sky above
An' it's all about feathers an' makin' love

Tweedle ee deet 'n' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee

Tweedle ee deet 'n' dee dee
    Deet
    'N' dee dee
    Deet

So this song is for the birds!

    On My Way to You
Music and Lyrics by Michel LeGrand and Alan & Marilyn Bergman

So often as I wait for sleep
    I find myself reciting
The words I've said or should have said
    Like scenes that need rewriting

    The smiles I never answered
Doors perhaps I should have opened
    Songs forgotten in the morning

I relive the roles I've played
The tears I may have squandered
The many pipers I have paid
    Along the roads I've wandered

Yet all the time I knew it
Love was somewhere out there waiting
Though I may regret a kiss or two

If I had changed a single day
What went amiss or went astray
I may have never found my way to you

It happens so often as I wait for sleep…

And all the time I knew it
Love was somewhere out there waiting
Though I may regret a kiss or two

If I had changed a single day
What went amiss or went astray
I would not change a thing that happened
    On my way to you
