Rosemary And Thyme
Episode #3 – The Annunciation
Scene 1
Gabriel
What we had here was a failure to communicate. My failure. I took the blame for makinā a wrong decision of presentation. In this most important moment, I had failed as the messenger. I felt so bad for her, but knew that the time had passed to make amends. Iād wait anā try again another day. I watched over her closely for the next coupla days. She seemed normal like, but I noticed that she stopped goinā taā the meadow each morninā. I knew she was jusā tryinā taā work it out in her own mind, but it werenāt easy for her. For a week she jus kept taā herself ā¦ spent a lotta time whisperinā taā her mama. Went taā work. Cleaned the house. Sat in the kitchen every night till two or three in the morninā jusā lookinā past her hand. Finally ā¦

Scene 3
Gabriel
That Thyme, sheās just really somethinā. I know I done her wrong. But I also know she got some kinda fiber. Thatās why God picked her. She was beinā tested. This was a critical time. Anā yaā know, also, that Josiah fella, heās a good man, but his time was cominā too. Oh, I believed in him. Anā Iām not sayinā that jusā ācuz heās the town minister. No. I know his goodness from personal experience. As you well know, Gabeās not much respected here āround these parts. Beinā the town drunk nāall, people tend to jusā put āim down as a no good. I āspose his job title donāt help much neither. Weirdo Night Watchman at the Junk Yard donāt play so well on his resume.
But Josiah now, heās jusā different. He actually kinda looks after olā Gabe. Sometimes he brings over a dinner plate an we set anā talk ābout life anā mostly the fact that I oughtta git offa the booze. Like jusā the other night ā¦
Scene 4a
Josiah
Now Gabe, maā friend, I know you donāt like me bringinā this up all the time, but, after all, you do your junk job anā I gotta do maā preachinā. Fact is, all this drinkinā jusā simply aināt a good idea.
Gabe
Well, yer right aācourse and some day, by God, I will. Jusā not today ā¦ or probāly tomorrow neither. Anā I knows yer jusā doinā it cuz yaā care ābout me, anā consequently I care ābout you, so ā¦
Scene 4b
Gabriel
Now one day Gabe was over to the church cleaninā out the basement anā heard Josiah upstairs prayinā. Not sure what he was prayinā for, but he was talkinā to the Angels, you know, like they was his friends or somethinā. At one point he thought he could hear a tear in Josiahās throat as he voiced his sincerity out loud anā to the rafters. He probāly thought he was ālone up there, for he was wishinā blessinās on a list aā townfolk anā assigninā healinā duties taā each aā the Angels. Like, āNow Michael, you need taā watch out fer Abigailās boy who has the chicken poxā, anā stuff like that. At one point Gabe heard him say, āFelicia, God is tooooo busy taā watch over everbody so you gotta help me git olā Gabe offa the drink.ā
Scene 4c
Gabe
I wondered who the hell was Felicia!
Gabriel
Yeah, (chuckles) (Sorry ābout that. He jusā pops up sometimes.) Later on when Josiah was visitinā Gabe over to the junk yard, Gabe found himself a most perspicacious anā clever way aā askinā āim āWho the hell was Felicia?ā
Gabe
So Josiah, who the hell is Felicia?
Josiah
Well now, thatās your guardian angel, Gabe. I assigned her to yaā. She been in contact with yaā?ā
Scene 5
Gabriel
Yeah, thatās Josiah. The manās jusā got a natural kinda goodness pourinā outta him. Thatās the only word I can think of at the moment. āGoodness.ā Thatās Josiah. So itās only natural that Josiah would be concerned about the changes in Thymeās behavior. Knowinā from Lizzie she wasnāt sleepinā at night, her beinā a no show at church that Sunday morninā first time he could remember, he decided he aughtaā pay Thyme anā Mama a little visit anā find out jusā what was goinā on. But before he had a chance taā do that, Thyme, lookinā taā fix what needed fixinā, took the bull by the tail anā made a visit taā him over at the church.
Scene 6
Thyme
Josiah, you gotta help me out here. I know you been wonderinā ābout me cuz maā behavior aināt been the usual of late. But before yaā go anā git yerself all worried-like anā do somethinā silly, I gotta big olā favor taā ask yaā. Ya see, somethinā happened tāother day ātween Gabe anā I. Somethinā that I gotta deal with on maā own ā¦ Anā Iām needinā yaā NOT taā git involved. Now donāt start lookinā at me cross eyed. I know, itās a lot taā ask, but Itās nothinā fer you taā be gittinā all worried ābout. Not the usual stuff aātall. Donāt even try. Itās way beyond yer imagination. Fact is, beyond anybodyās imagination. This aināt easy fer me, anā when the time comes, Iāll tell yaā all ābout it.
Josiah
Sweetheart, you hafta forgive Gabe. He lives in that junkyard, he sleeps in that junkyard, heās up all night anā sleeps all day and in between he gets on the bottle. Iām not surprised that whatever this is, itās gotcha all discombobulated.
Thyme
Yeah, thatās right, thatās what I am ā discombobulated. So I gotta lotta thinkinā taā do. This here represents a change in maā life, anā consequently a change in all our lives. Now I accept this, but, quite honestly, it scares the bejesus outta me. Now here I am sayinā too much already.
Josiah
Well now, Sweetheart yaā certainly got maā attention, anā Iāll comply taā yer wishes, anā I promise you that Iāll have a talk with him and straighten this out when time comes. Iām sure he donāt mean no harm. I know this man like a brother anā there aināt a mean bone in his body. Anā you can be sure that Iāll be prayinā for yaā both. Itās just probāly the liquor doinā its thing on his brain. Too much of that stuff can be real nasty ā¦ Now, are yaā sure yaā canāt even give me the smallest aā clues as taā whatās goinā on here?
Thyme
(with great intent)
Josiah, thank yaā fer respectinā maā wishes now. Believe me, you anā Lizzieāll be the first taā know the entire story. I can only say ā¦ that Gabe is the messenger of God here to announce the second coming of the Christ.
(Big pause)
Josiah
He what?
Thyme
You heard me right. Now you promised taā give me time here taā straighten this all out. I expect yaā taā live up taā yer promise.
Josiah
He what?!
Thyme
(A warning)
Josiah ā¦ !
Scene 7
(Musical sting here ā¦ Scene change as time passes ā¦)
Josiah
Gabe! Gabe!! Where you at? Gabe!
Gabe
(waking up from his stupor)
Good Lord, not again. Canāt you see Iām tryinā to get some sleep around here? Leave me be!
Josiah
Gabe, my friend, whatās this I hear ābout you scarinā my betrothed with your crazy ideas?
Gabe
(wearily)
Uh oh. Not so crazy, Josiah. Consider the fact that it might be true.
Josiah
What!? That youāre the messenger of God here to announce the second coming of the Christ? Good Lord, Gabe, have you looked in the mirror lately?
Gabe
Well, what yaā see aināt āzactly whatcha git.
Josiah
(the minister in him comes out)
Dear God in Heaven, bequeath to me now the power to heal this man of his lunacy!
Gabe
Josiah, what you see before you is simply a disguise — created to avert the attention of the people of Skedee to the fact that I am the Angel Gabriel. Maā actinā crazy anā drunk all the time is jusā part aā maā disguise. If they knew who I really was, theyād be up here all the time pesterinā me anā askinā fer autographs anā such.
Josiah
Lord, bring on the straight jackets! One for Gabe anā one for me! I must be outta my mind as well.
Gabe
Now Josiah, I know this probably comes as a surprise to you,
but ā¦
Josiah
Probably? Probably?? Like I might have suspected it before?
Gabe
Aw, cāmon, Josiah. Gimme a chance here to āsplain myself. Iām jusā tryinā to carry out Godās orders.
Josiah
Look, my friend, if yaā know whatās good for yaā, youāll stay away from Thyme. Until you can get your head straight, I think itās better that you donāt go near her. Fact is, you better stay away from everybody. Otherwise the law is gonna put you away. Gabe, you canāt go āround town spoutinā this stuff. People already think youāre a little bit tetched in the head as is.
Gabe
Well, yaā see that was my intention — you know, part of the disguise ā¦ after all, I canāt be walkinā around town wearinā my wings.
Josiah
Aw, Gabe, Iām so sorry ā¦ we gotta get you some real help here.
Gabe
(taking another tack)
OK, OK, Josiah, wait. Maybe youāre right. Maybe you could pray for me. Maybe that could help. Anā Iāll agree to stayinā away from Thyme for the time being. But āfore I do that, maybe I could jusā take a moment anā apologize to her ā¦ you know, for scarinā her. Youāre right, Josiah, must be the liquor. I promise to stay off it ā¦ for a whole week, if necessary.
Josiah
OK, Gabe, thatās better. I think apologies are in order. Iāll bring her on down here and you can say youāre sorry.
Gabe
Nah, nah, nah, Iāll go on up to her place. Thank you, Josiah. You a saint. I feel the healinā cominā on already!
Josiah (most pious)
The Lord worketh through me in wondrous ways, Gabe ā¦ in wondrous ways.
Scene 8
Gabriel
Time passed. Everyone seemed appeased. But I knew that things werenāt āzactly what they appeared to be on the surface. I decided to turn to the big guy to get a shot aā good advice.
Gabriel
(Continuing)
God!
God
Yes, Gabriel.
Gabriel
God, Iām sure you know already about my unfortunate meeting with Thyme.
God
Yup.
Gabriel
I know, I blew it. I blew it.
God
Did you?.
Gabriel
Anā Iāll fix it.
God
I know you will.
Gabriel
Wait. You know somethinā I donāt?
God
Yup. But that isnāt why youāre here, is it?
Gabriel
Right. As usual I’m havinā the usual problem.
God
Uh huh.
Gabriel
Yeah, they believe in you, but they donāt believe in me.
God
I know. The age old problem.
Gabriel
I know you know, but I donāt know what to do about it. I canāt seem to get through to either one of āem.
God
You sure about that?
Gabriel
Well, yeah, Iām sure. Thyme says sheās in a state of discombobulation.
God
I know. You just have to figure out over what. Have patience, Gabriel. Maybe play āem a tune on that trumpet of yours. That usually does the trick.
Gabriel
Well, Josiahās settinā up a meeting with me anā Thyme. āLeast I got another chance to meet with her anā deliver the message. Itās a hard thing to accept, I guess.
God
Uh huh ā¦ but sheāll get it. Sheās a believer. Thatās why I picked her. Pure as moonlight.
Scene 9
(Time passes ā¦ scene change music)
Gabriel
So it came time to pay my visit to Thyme to beg forgiveness or perhaps further convince. Nervousness is not a feeling that us angels experience very often. Usually weāre very much in charge of the situations that we find ourselves in, and since weāve been angelinā for millenia now, weāre pretty good at it. But, letās face it. This was a big one. The ramifications were such that I needed to be a hundred percent on my game. I found her in the kitchen shellinā peas while Mama napped in the back bedroom. I came in the back screen door, so I donāt think she saw me cominā. She had her back to me when I first spoke.
Scene 10
Gabe
Hello Thyme.
Gabriel
She never even turned, but continued shellinā.
Thyme
Hello Gabe.
Gabe
What chu doinā?
Thyme
Oh, jusā shellinā some peas.
Gabriel
(Though I had planned my speech, I quickly decided to go with the flow.)
Gabe (continues)
You need some help?
Thyme
No thanks, Just about done here.
Gabe
Thyme, I come to apologize.
Thyme
Uh huh. Josiah said youād be makinā a visit.
Gabe
I see that yaā donāt even wanna look at me anā so Iām so sorry if I scared you.
Thyme
You donāt sound so scary now.
Gabe
No, Thyme, I aināt really scary aātall.
Thyme
You feelinā better?
Gabe
I feel just fine.
Thyme
Iām glad.
Gabe
You feelinā better?
Thyme
Oh yes. Better.
Gabe
No hard feelings?
Thyme
No hard feelings.
Gabe
Thyme, I wonder if you might favor me a moment here. Iād like to play a little something on my trumpet.
Thyme
What ā¦ right here in the kitchen?
Gabe
Yeah, I āspose ā¦ yeah, right here in the kitchen.
Thyme
Why Gabe, I didnāt know you played. You been takinā lessons on the sly?
Gabe
Iāve actually been playing for quite a long time, Thyme.
Thyme
Uh huh. Well then go right ahead. You donāt mind if I continue shellinā these peas do ya?ā
Gabe
No, Thyme. Go right ahead.
So I took out my Bach Stradivarius anā began to play. She never once turned around.
(Now the music plays softly as Thyme continues to shell peas. We hear him playing. It is a beautiful, gentle, yet soaring, piece that starts simply, acapella, but eventually is joined by a lonely guitar.)
The Chosen One
Gabriel
Dearest Thyme, find freedom in my song
For you have found great favor with the Lord
And against all odds, God is within you
And you are the chosen one
Little Mother, in a little while
The Lord will bring forth your holy child.
May you hear the truth in this joyful song
That this miracle of life
Changes life as you know it
For you are the chosen one
You are the chosen one
Thyme
Hello Gabriel.
Gabriel.
Hello Thyme.
Gabe
The song over, Thyme simply went back to shelling her peas.
Scene 11
(Time passes ā¦ scene change music)
Gabriel
Message delivered. Presentation accepted. I was off the hook. Well, aācourse, it were only natural anā human-like that she share her little secret with at least one other person ā anā that aācourse was Lizzie, back taā beinā her bestest friend, but unfortunately, one aā the townās foremost gossips. That night, on the phone ā¦
Scene 12a
Thyme
(On the phone)
(Humble and contained)
Lizzie! Lizzie, are yaā sittinā down? Uh huh. Oh, Lizzie, I got the message. The message from God! Just waitāll you hear this. I am pregnant with Godās child. The son of God! Anā I get to be his mother. Iāve been chosen! I hardly know what to think. Itās unbelievable!
Lizzie
(Long beat, as she tries to take this all in)
Well. Well, youāre sure right about that, Thyme. Itās definitely unbelievable. Lordy ā¦ Have you gone completely dumb nuts? Sweetie, youāre just imagining things. Thyme, God doesnāt actually ātalkā to you, much less ā¦ well ā¦ well ā¦ you know ā¦
Thyme
Well, youāre right, in this instance, it was actually Gabriel, the angel, who brought the message!
Lizzie
(Wary)
Uh huh.
Thyme
Yeah, and guess what!? Gabriel, the angel, is actually our very own Gabe, down at the junkyard! All this time heās been in disguise!
Lizzie
Good Lord, Thyme, youāve gone completely whackjob on me, Girl. You need to take a long vacation. Honey pie, this is not real. Itās just not real. Oh my goodness, you aināt mentioned this to Josiah yet, have yaā?
Thyme
No. No ā¦
Lizzie
Well see that cha donāt! I understand whatās happened here. Now Thyme, donāt ever tell him you had these thoughts. You hear? Girl, you gotta at least come up with a better excuse than this! Admit it now. Youāre knocked up and thatās that.
Thyme
What? No, I ā¦ I ā¦
Music]
Lizzie
Good Lord, Thyme nobodyās ever gonna believe this cockamamie story. You gotta do better than this!
Thyme
OK, I know this sounds a little far fetched ā¦
Lizzie
A little?!
You Donāt āSpec Him To Believe That, Do you? – Reprise 2
Lizzie (sings)
(Sigh)
Naive
Lordy you girl are so naive
Jusā what in the world do you think he is?
Born yesterday?
I donā know ābout you, Thyme, I donno ā¦
You still think that man is innocent
Wide-eyed anā countrified
But donāt be short changinā no country boy
If you think heās as naive as you are
Youāre just a fool
Anā as taā that cockamamie story you dreamed up
You donāt āspec him to believe that
Do you?
Tsk Tsk
Throwinā away your virginity
All for one hot night!
Now you donāt really āspec him to believe that
Do you?
Do you?
Do you?
Scene 12b
Thyme
But Lizzie, Iām tellinā you the truth! You gotta believe me.
Lizzie
No darlinā, I donāt gotta believe you. I gotta get you to a shrink!
Thyme
You just donāt understand. I thought, of all people, you would understand.
Lizzie
No, I donāt understand. Aināt nobody gonna understand this, Thyme. Now get off this anā start facinā the facts! Good Lord, Thyme ā¦ whatās happened to you?
Gabriel (one liner)
With that question goinā unanswered, Lizzie turns anā walked off mumblinā somethinā unmentionable ā¦ in a bit of a huff. [Music]
Thyme
(Now alone, sings)
The Secret
I guess I got me a secret
That no one wants to hear
Seems that evāre one Iād try to tell
Would think Iām kinda queer
Anā If I went anā told my mama
Sheād just set there noddinā that olā head of hers
Anā humminā that same dern song
Like I donāt even exist
Why I even tried to tell my best friend Lizzie
But no matter how hard Iād persist
She kept on like Iāze crazy or lyinā
Or hidinā something awful
Anā simply dismissed my precious secret
Like it was jusā my imagination
Now what do I do ābout that?
Maybe Iām jusā imagininā things
Anā makinā this whole thing up
No! I did not jusā think it up
Or dream it up
Or scheme it up
As a way of hidinā beinā knocked up!
Thank you, Miss Lizzie Cranbottom!
Now what kinda friend would believe
Such a thing like that?
I guess I got me a secret
That no one wants to hear
Well anā now I got to tell the one
Whose heart I hold most dear
Anā I wouldnāt put it past him
Just to up anā disappear on me
When I tell him ābout this baby
Heāll just sit there noddinā that sweet head of his
Anā tryinā to understand
When he knows ā¦ he aināt the one
Oh Lord, I know, I jusā donāt have the words
I know Iāll break him
Anā no matter how delicate itās done
There aināt no way Iāll ever assure him
Or make him understand that
Though I aināt carryinā his son
He too has been chosen to be the father of the child
He too has been chosen to be the father of the child
My good manās been called upon
To move mountains
Oh God, help me do this.
So can I find me the courage?
To up anā tell him this now?
No! I really donāt think so
And yet
And yet
And yet I must
Or this breach of trust will
Surely turn our marriage into dust
Anā whittle our lives away
Now what kind of love could survive a thing like that?
I guess I got me a secret
That no one wants to hear
Anā now I know itās time for Thyme
To up anā face the fear
(She sings to the baby in her belly)
Oh my precious little secret
You my glorious unborn child
No matter the outcome
You anā I go forth as one
The time has come
The time has come
The time has come
Thyme
Josiah. Josiah! Iām here to tell yaā the whole truth ā¦ anā nothinā but the truth!
